After three months mapping team were able to come up with a base the map of mathare showing major roads, hospitals, chain stores, super market, schools both online maps and printed maps were produced. Early this April this year we organized community forum which was held at mathare poly technique more than one hundred fifty people attended. During the function a question was posed to community member if they can write down some of the problems facing them on a piece of paper and they were later sub divided into four groups and here are some of the community remarks
- Water and sanitation
- Health
- Education
- Security
With assistance from community cleaning service who are our partners they assisted us to come up with questioners which truly helped us in mapping all toilets water points open defecation area in mathare mabatini, thayu, mashimoni & mathare number 10. After two months we were able to come up with different type of map showing open drainages, open defecation areas, and public toilets etc.
During this process they were lot of challenges most members of mathare community thought that we were government spy’s who were out to collect information on illegal water connection in mathare. Since the map was produced already two toilets have been constructed by community cleaning service to some the areas which were being used as open defecation area’s and I hope soon so many stake holders will chip in to improve issues relating water and sanitation in mathare
